Forest School

Weekly Forest School for Every Child

At our school, every child takes part in Forest School every week. As a valued part of school life, Forest School provides regular opportunities to learn, explore and grow outdoors through practical, hands-on experiences. Children develop confidence, resilience, independence and a lifelong respect for the natural world

Forest School sessions are led by Mrs Skirrow, a fully qualified Forest School Leader. Children benefit from learning in both our beautiful school grounds and a nearby woodland site, providing a rich range of outdoor experiences throughout their time at school.

Why Forest School?

Forest School helps children to:

  • Build confidence and self-esteem
  • Develop resilience and independence
  • Strengthen teamwork and communication skills
  • Learn to assess and manage risk safely
  • Become creative problem-solvers
  • Develop a sense of responsibility for the environment

What Children Learn

EYFS & KS1

Children begin by exploring the natural environment through activities such as nature discovery, simple shelter building, knot tying, safe tool use and cooperative play.

Lower KS2

Children develop practical outdoor skills through shelter construction, environmental investigations, habitat studies, knot work, tool use and collaborative projects.

Upper KS2

Children apply their skills with increasing independence through woodland projects, navigation activities, advanced shelter building, leadership opportunities and conservation work.

Skills for Life

Throughout their Forest School journey, children progressively develop:

🌿 Environmental awareness
🪢 Knot and rope skills
🛠 Safe and responsible tool use
🏕 Shelter building and outdoor survival skills
🤝 Teamwork and leadership
💡 Confidence, resilience and problem-solving

Learning Across the Curriculum

Forest School enriches learning across the curriculum, including Science, Geography, History, Design Technology and Personal Development. By linking outdoor experiences to classroom learning, children gain meaningful, real-world opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills.

Our Vision

We want every child to leave our school as a confident learner, a resilient problem-solver, an effective team member and a responsible citizen who values and cares for the natural environment.
